March 2017 Superintendent Message

I really enjoyed stepping back into the classroom for a half day filling in for our Spanish teacher at Mount Airy High School. It gave me a chance to relive my days as a high school teacher and remember how great it was to work with students every day. We did this experiment by giving teachers a half day off if their name was drawn because they gave to the United Fund. It was such a reminder about how awesome our students are, how each one has their own personality, and that building relationships is the key to effective teaching. We all need reminders about why we come to work every day and that was a fun reminder.

We had an exciting month with a great week of “MA loves the bus” celebrating our bus drivers. These are hard working folks that often are the unsung heroes of our district. It was great giving them some much needed words of thanks. I also had the chance to go to Washington, DC during this interesting time to speak with Education Secretary DeVos and Chairwoman of the Education Committee, Virginia Foxx. It is an important time for us to remind our policy makers about the importance of public school for all students.

Soon we will be transitioning many students to their next school. It’s a great time to begin thinking about which classes you want to take in middle school and high school. Our schools are working on innovative transition plans to make sure students are families are well informed of their choices.

Thanks for your support of Mount Airy City Schools and being part of the team that Leads - Innovates - Serves. Together we make MACS great!
