Hurricane Update 9-13-18 4:40PM: We have been in constant contact with our local emergency services, meteorologists, and the National Weather Service to track the hurricane. While the hurricane is timed to hit Mount Airy on Saturday, it appears as though strong winds will arrive Friday. It is not safe for our buses to be on the road with the strong winds that are expected. We feel that the best decision for the safety of our students, bus drivers, student drivers, and staff is to close school early on Friday, September 14.
Mount Airy City Schools will dismiss at 12:30 pm, providing everyone time to get home safely before winds hit our area. Students will eat lunch prior to dismissal. Jones and Mount Airy Middle School will dismiss at 12:15 pm while Tharrington Primary and Mount Airy High School will dismissal at 12:30 pm. This staggered dismissal is used daily as our buses are shared between schools.
We encourage everyone to be prepared for the storm, flooding, and possible power outages. We will communicate via SchoolMessenger (calls and texts), our social media outlets, TV, radio, and our website. Charge any battery backups you have so you will have a working cell phone, should power be out for an extended period of time.
